Full Description: This is Rolex. Rolex came to HLR through nothing short of a miracle. You see, two HLR volunteers came across Rolex while driving home after a long night spent at a local planning commission meeting. They had almost made it to their destination when they saw police lights and a blocked roadway. They thought, this must be a wreck, but as they drove by they saw poor Rolex laying in the middle of the road. He had been hit by a vehicle and was clearly in shock, in a tremendous amount of pain, and in distress. Seeing an injured lab is bad enough, but finding one at 10:45 at night in the middle of the road was overwhelming. But, our volunteers knew HLR had to help him – even if he didn’t make it. So, they began discussions with the OKC Police Department and Animal Control and ultimately arranged to have Rolex’s “impound” time spent in our care. It was his only chance for survival. It was a late night, but Rolex made it to the emergency vet and made it through the night.
The next day, Rolex was stable and given a full exam – he had in fact been hit by a car and incurred serious injuries. Rolex suffered multiple broken ribs, a punctured and collapsed lung, several bruised internal organs, and a serious case of road rash. Despite these injuries, Rolex was nothing but tail wags, nuzzles, and kisses. This boy seriously does not have a mean bone in his body – he is calm, sweet, and really just likes to be near you so he can put his head in your lap. Rolex seems to be fine with other dogs, too – although he is not up for play time just yet.
Our wonderful vets believe Rolex will make a full recovery – he just needs time to heal and lots and lots of TLC and love. Stay tuned for more information on Rolex and how he is progressing. He is a special labbie to us here at HLR, and was clearly destined to have a second chance at life in a new loving forever home.
UPDATE 12/18/2009: Rolex has completely healed and has now been a foster home for almost a week, he has gained some weight and put a shine on his coat. He has adapted quickly and loves to play with toys and the two smaller girl dogs in the household and other dogs as well. He is somewhat of a clown and will lay on his back and play with toys. He gets very excited when it is time for a ride or a walk (although he would prefer to run), and he now loves to ride as long as he can stick his head out the window and breathe the cold air. He still needs some work with walking on the leash and obedience, although he does quite well at showings while meeting people and other dogs. He lays his ears down, squints his eyes and puts that sad teddy-bear head on your lap when he wants to get his way, melting your heart.
He was a bit protective of his food at first, but has gotten over that now that he knows he won't go hungry and there will always be more to come later. He loves treats and will sit for them and is learning "down", "wait", "go lay down". He is housebroken and crate trained and "goes to bed" in his crate upon command as long as there is a treat waiting in it. Now that he has a yard to run around in, he is gaining more and more energy each day, acting younger than his estimated age.
UPDATE- 1/5/2010: Rolex is doing fine and won't need any further medical treatments for his injuries. He is quite the clown and loves, loves, loves toys and belly rubs more than anything. He gets along well with everyone - dogs and people. A former foster lab was visiting over the holidays and they had a great time playing and chasing each other through the snow drifts. He really enjoyed having someone his own size around to wrestle with!
