Save a Lab's Life: Open your heart and your home and become a foster. What is a foster home? Foster homes are the most important part of Heartland Lab Rescue, we can only save as many dogs as we have foster homes. A foster parent provides a safe and loving environment for dogs until they are adopted. The foster home helps the dog learn basic family skills so they can be set up for success when they find their forever home. Approved veterinary expenses, food and a crate are taken care of by Heartland Lab Rescue. What do foster homes do? Provide Sanctuary: Give your foster Rescue a safe place to live while he's up for adoption. You take care of loving the dog and we take care of food, medical and provide a crate. Give Love and Kisses: A rescue dog has been through a lot of changes and needs a nice comfortable place to be in the interim while he is waiting for his forever home. So love him all you can! Learn about them: After your foster dog gets a little more comfortable, spend some time getting to know him. Learn the rescue's personality to help determine what forever home will best suit him. Help them meet people: HLR has four showings a month, when it is possible bring your dog to showings to help them find their new home. There are also many volunteers that are able to help you transport your dog to showings if you are not able to. Coordinate Healthcare: All approved vet bills are paid by HLR, but you will need to transport your foster dog to an HLR vet to get care. Teach House Manners: Help your foster Rescue become "family friendly." Sometimes our rescue dogs may need some basic obedience and indoor etiquette. After all, they may have never been shown how to be a member of the family. In almost all circumstances dogs do not come to us because they were bad dogs, it was because their past caretakers didn't have the time to properly teach the dog basic obedience or didn't do their research and thought keeping a dog outside would be okay. The good thing for us is Labs are incredibly smart dogs and they learn quick! Help find their Forever Home: You are your foster's best advocate. Talk with approved adoption applicants about your foster and meet families that may be a fit. The HLR application coordinator and other volunteers will help. Meet some of our fosters
"Fostering has been a joy for us. Often people say, "but don't you get attached?" Absolutely, but you get to know each of their personalities, how special they are and seeing them go to their forever homes makes it all worth it. It is truly a rewarding experience to help save these very deserving labbies." -Jason & Ashley "We love getting to know each of their personalities, Lexi loved to snuggle up and watch T.V. with us, Scooter loved car rides, Molly was a sucker for bread and had to hide the bread box. While it is hard to see them go, we love knowing that we have not only helped our new friend find their forever family, we have helped the family find their new best friend." -Alex and Angela
